Assistant designer - Internship

Join HIER to support our research projects and daily design work, from research and hands-on making to collaborating on workshop tasks and developing new ideas.

Assistant Designer
Internship

Starting at the end of September · Minimum 4 months · 3 to 5 days per week

We see this internship as an opportunity for meaningful exchange, creative collaboration, and catalytic conversations.

As an Assistant Designer Intern, you’ll work closely with our team on new research projects and the day-to-day life of the studio. You’ll be involved in different stages of the design process, from the first questions and ideas to prototyping, production, and documentation.

Research can happen in many ways: through reading and writing, conversations, fieldwork, drawing, experimenting, and making. You’ll have the opportunity to join discussions, follow projects as they develop, and gain insight into how we work as a studio.

Local production and materials are an important part of our approach. We believe in producing HIER; working with local goods, suppliers, craftspeople, and accessible technologies wherever possible. Hopefully, that’s something that interests you too.

Your role

  • Participate in all phases of the design process, from research and conceptualisation to prototyping and production

  • Contribute to online and field research

  • Explore ideas through writing, drawing, modelling, and making

  • Research materials, suppliers, craftspeople, and accessible technologies

  • Assist with workshop prototyping and product development

  • Take part in the daily tasks and organisation of the workshop

  • Document research, experiments, prototypes, and finished work

  • Contribute to the development of products that balance ergonomics, aesthetics, functionality, durability, and cost

  • Collaborate with different members of the team on a range of studio tasks

We’re looking for someone with

  • Experience in industrial design, product design, or wood/metal craftsmanship

  • Experience with 3D software

  • Good manual and practical skills

  • An interest in materials, making, and how things are produced

  • Speaks English and French or Dutch

  • A curious, flexible, and multitasking mindset

  • Strong opinions, combined with a constructive and cooperative attitude

  • A driving licence

Practical details

  • Lunch and travel expenses from home are covered

  • This is an unpaid internship

  • University paperwork and an official internship agreement are required

Project details to be discussed in an interview.
